Happy New Year!!!

It's almost 8pm and we just had dinner. Jojo's the cook today and here's what he prepared for us.

The three of us are gonna count down with the TV tonight. We even have our new year hats and noise makers (^_^) Hopefully, Finn won't get sleepy since we made him take a nap this afternoon.
We wish you all the best in 2008! Happy New Year!!!

Goodies

We had lunch yesterday at my Aunt's and here are some photos of the goodies she made with Finn's cousins.

Holiday Program and Giveaways

The Holiday Program in Finn's school was held this morning. Classes from Pre-K up to 5th grade performed 2 songs each and Finn's class sang Jingle Bells and the Dradle Song. Here are some photos.

Here's a clip of them singing Jingle Bells. I laughed at the end coz one of the boys' jingle bells fell apart right at the end (^_^)

This is the Dradle Song.

The girl next to Finn has been trying to hold his hand throughout and she finally managed to snag him in the end (^_^) So cute!

Now this is something I made that we gave to our friends since we don't give gifts for the adults, only the kids. I made a candybar wrapper with our picture on it and our message in the back. There are companies out there who do this professionally but why order when I can do it myself? It turned out ok. Maybe next time I'll try to find a glossy paper to print on. This was just printed on ordinary copy paper so the quality isn't really great but I think it turned out well for my first try (^_^) I even have a template ready for minis and I'm thinking of doing that for Finn's birthday giveaways. What do you think?

Icy

We had a mix of snow, ice and freezing rain yesterday and this is the result.

Isn't it sooo pretty? It looks amazing at night too when light hits all the icicles but I didn't want to bring out my tripod last night =P If it doesn't melt and I don't get lazy, I'll try to do it tonight.

Sushi Lunch

There's a new market nearby called Riverside Market coz it's right beside the river. We saw in an ad that their sushi bar is open so we decided to try it out. The market itself is cute coz it's not really big but they do have fresh whole fish there and meats and lots of produce and fruits. The sushi bar is tucked in a corner but we thought we'd just have it made to go and eat at home. We bought spicy shrimp, spicy tuna, spicy salmon and eel {yeah, we like spicy food (^_^)}. It was ok, it was spicy and it was a good lunch since we had 16 pcs each. So whenever we get that sudden urge to have sushi, there's something nearby.

BTW, I forgot to post a video of Finn bowling so here it is.

Bowling Party

We attended Ethan's 7th Birthday Party today in CT and Finn got to bowl for the first time (^_^) He loved it! The place is nice and the alley was really geared for kids. There were only 6 lanes and their party occupied 4 I think. The kids had a great time. After their time was up in the alley, we all went to the party room for pizza and cake. Boy were the kids hungry! 3 large pizzas were gone in a snap! lol ... all that bowling sure worked up their appetites (^_^) Here are some photos from the party.

PS on New Stuff

I forgot to tell you that my new camera came with a free Epson R280 Photo Printer (^_^) Sweet!!!! Haven't hooked it up yet, no space on my desk as I have 2 other printers already. Have to reorganize ...

New Stuff!

Black Friday has come and gone and we went shopping yesterday morning. Other stuff that we needed, Jojo was able to order online for the same discounted price as in the stores so we didn't have to rush to the stores for those. What we did buy yesterday was Finn's Nintendo DS Lite (Gold) Bundle plus another game and the Transformer Case set. If you can see in the 2nd photo, the cover of the case has an interchangeable picture. Instead of putting in what came with the set, I inserted Finn's photo instead to really personalize it. Even if it is Finn's, I'm gonna play with it while he's in school .. hehehe(^_^)
Today, Jojo surprised me with my gift - a black Sony Cybershot DSC-W80 (^_^) What I especially like about it is its super steady shot feature. I need that for taking action shots of Finn and also for my everyday photos to make sure they're not even the tiniest bit blurred. Now I just have to look for a case for it. Thank you BAJ! Mwahhhh (^x^)

Rippers

We picked Finn up from school at 12.30pm and then we went out for lunch at Rutt's Hut, a nondescript restaurant in Clifton. I just found out about it in one of Travel Channel's Top Hot Dog places special and Rutt's is one of them because of their deep fried hot dogs, lovingly nicknamed rippers. Why? Because they literally rip open when deep fried (^_^)
Jojo and I ordered 2 hotdogs each topped with their special Rutt's relish (said to be the best too), fries with gravy and buffalo wings that came with fries as well plus 2 medium sodas. Finn had a plain hotdog with plain fries and a soda. It was good but you gotta have at least 2 hot dogs, one isn't enough (^_^) The wings are good too, a bit crunchy unlike most wings that have soft skin.
The place is small and only has 2 counters in the middle and a long one along the window with a children's counter below it. If you want to sit down, there's a bar next door where you can bring your food in but for the real thing, I think it's better to eat on the counters. (The picture of the counters I got online - didn't want to take a picture of it with all the people there)
There were a lot of patrons from all walks of life, young (being Finn) and old, teenagers, men and women in suits, security guys, everybody! The place may not look it but I guess it really is popular. We left after 1pm and there were still people waiting in line.
The price isn't bad either, only $1.80 per hotdog. The wings were over $4 and the fries at over $3. Definitely a place to visit again.

Parent-Teacher Conference

For 3 days this week, Finn only has 4-hour sessions in school because they scheduled the Parent-Teacher Conference in afternoon. My slot was at 1.35-1.50 today, just 15 minutes with the teacher.
Academically, Finn is doing great. All the kids were assessed in September and she said that they have some sort of scoring for them (highest of 35) that by the end of the schoolyear (June), the kids should have at least 22 points and Finn already scored 25 points at the beginning of the year. Also, in all of the tests they've taken, he only made one mistake (^_^)
The only concern is sharing. It seems that Finn would sometimes hog the toys and would get upset if he needs to share so that's one thing he needs to work on. I guess that's the drawback for being an only child. Oh well, at least it's nothing major, and I'm very proud of his academics. Good job Finn!

DK Visit

No, not Donna Karan but Daniel and Keng, friends from UP Green League. Keng is studying at Albert Einstein and Daniel is here for the weekend. They came to our house after getting lost (they got off the bus one stop early coz they followed some girls who got off at that stop), luckily ours wasn't that far from where they were. Anyhoo, we left for Johnny Carino's for dinner and when we got there, waiting time was 40 mins. Jojo went next door to Shannon Rose and it was the same. It's a Friday night so that's to be expected but we were hungry, it was almost 8pm then. We called Applebee's to check first their waiting time and it was 10-20 mins so we went there instead.
So dinner was good, lots of laughs and catching up with the guys. We took them back to Keng's apartment in the Bronx, right next to Albert Einstein. There we met his one-eyed dog ... I forgot the name sorry. He's so cute! He doesn't bark at all coz pets aren't allowed in their building so he really has to stay quiet (don't tell anybody ok?) When we got in, he was all excited to see more people and he immediately got his toy and went from one person to the next, showing it off (^_^) So cute! But later on my allergies acted up and started sneezing so I had to stay away from the dog.
Finn is interested in the human body and so I took one book from the shelf on the human anatomy. We started looking at the pictures and he's not at all squeamish. Sometimes he'd say "eewwww, that looks gross" but he doesn't turn away and will ask which is which. Keng was so impressed he gave that book to us (^_^) Thanks Keng!
So when it was nearly midnight, we decided to start heading back home. I hope we get to see each other again sometime - they're both so busy!

S-P-E-L-L-I-N-G

Finn can read already, although sometimes he'll ask for help on which sound is the right one especially for vowels. Here are a few words that he tried to spell out according to how he says it.

I give him props for spelling peanut butter correctly (not sure if he copied it from somewhere) and the carrot juice is pretty funny. The orange well, if I show him the word orange, he knows it's orange so I don't know why he spelt it that way ... hmmmm. But at least he's trying (^_^) Mind you, this isn't part of his schoolwork, he just wants to do it.

Fabulous!

Seems that awards are abundant all over the blog world (^_^) Thanks to Kaye for presenting me with this Fab Award. I pass it on to Hazel, Mawie and Rhea for being such "loyal" employees (~_^)
3

Woohoo!!!!

Finn got his Junior Black Belt this afternoon along with this huge trophy (^_^) Congratulations Finn! I'm so very proud of you. Next goal ... black belt!!!

Got tagged and awarded

Thanks Mawie for this award (^_^) And I pass it on to the same people that I tagged below.

Got tagged, also by Mawie, about shopping. I tag Cessna, Hazel, and Liz.

~ Start copy ~

It’s very simple. When you receive this tag, copy the whole list and add your own shopping tip to the bottom and pass it on. Don't forget to link to your blog.

1. Wear comfy clothing when you’re shopping. You don’t wanna fuss with too many laces and buttons when you’re trying clothes on.

2. Choose stores offering some kind of reward program, e.g. purchase points, rebates or store coupons. Knowing how the program works and when to use them will save you a lot of money in the long run.

3. Always ask for a discount or bargain, especially when you pay cash for big purchase like furniture and electrical items, you will be surprised how much lesser you have to pay.

4. Buy in bulk or from the hypermarket. Hypermarket like Giant and Tesco has greater offer than places like Jusco or Parkson. (I’m referring to household stuffs)

5. For food stuff, always check the expiry dates, get items with later expiry dates so that you can store them longer.

6. Warehouse discount, off-season handbags products sale, factory outlet stores are great places to find super-ultra-fabulous bargains. -and again, don't say i didn't tell you this :p

7. When you find something that you like, try and look around first, who knows the next shop offers it at a lower price.

8. Don't go crazy shopping just because it's sale. Think carefully whether the item is something you would buy for the regular price but couldn't afford it. Otherwise, you might end up regretting buying the item.

9. Wait for end of season sales to buy seasonal items when they are very, very cheap as the stores need their old inventory sold. Also wait for holiday sales when almost every store has some kind of sale or special offer going on.

~ End copy ~

Belt Test

Finn took a belt test this afternoon for him to be promoted to Junior Black. For normal promotion tests, they break only one board but since he's going for Junior Black, Master Kim made him break 6 boards so he can show off different breaking techniques. He did a wonderful job (^_^) Congratulations Finn! I'm sure you'll earn your Junior Black Belt.

Yummy-tastic!

For some reason, I just remembered this photo and can't believe I forgot to share with you all! This was taken in Narita on our way back from the Philippines. Would you believe Finn finished the entire bowl? Yup, and as he would sometimes say - it's yummy-tastic!

Tandemu

I am just loving this song right now! I first heard it on FUNimation when they were advertising the Mr. Stain on Junk Alley DVD. It just makes me want to dance myself silly especially when you see Mr. Stain (Garakuta) and the other characters dance to this (^_^) I had a hard time tracking this song down and finally, I found the artist (Halcali) and here's their video. Makes you smile doesn't it? Now to put it in my phone (^-^)

Texas

We have a map of the United States for the state quarters kinda like this one and Finn asked for that this morning. I didn't know why but then after a while he called me with a frustrated voice saying it doesn't look like Texas. "What doesn't look like Texas?" And then I saw that he drew this map on his Etch-A-Sketch.

I was so impressed!!! I included an outline of Texas for comparison. I mean, it's hard enough to draw something simple on this but a map? Wow! After I kept telling him how proud I am of what he did and taking pictures, he forgot about his frustration (^_^).

On Cars and FiOS

Every week, we change cars. No, it's not because we're rich, it's because Jojo travels every week and so he needs a car. He can't take ours coz then I won't have anything to use. So he rents one every week, paid for by his company of course. These are the last 3. We weren't able to take pictures of the previous ones but from now on, I'll be posting our car of the week.

We've been waiting for FiOS to become available in our area for a long time and finally, it's here! We had it installed on Wednesday (we're the first ones in our neighborhood too BTW) and it took 5 hours to finish! First he had to run a cable from the pole to our house and then set up the "brains" inside our apartment, change the cable box, connect the brains to the tv and phone, set up the wireless router which is somehow linked to everything as well, add another box for Finn's room, test the connections, test the internet and after 5 hours, everything was a-ok. So now we've got the power of fiber optics for our TVs (picture is awesome) with DVR so we don't miss a show, we've also got TFC now coz Comcast didn't have it, and what I'm so very excited about is I get to watch anime 24/7 with FUNimation!!!!! No more fighting over who gets to watch in the living room coz Finn has his own box with all the channels available plus ondemand (^_^) I also like the way they organized their channels. Local TV gets the first 49 channels, then entertainment next, then sports, then news, information, etc. Like Finn, all he needs to know are the kids channels and all he has to do is go up or down a channel, unlike with Comcast, 43 and 44 is Nick, 136 is Disney, 13/21 is PBS, it gets confusing.
Another good thing about FiOS is it's amazing speed! I uploaded 140 hi-res pics yesterday and it would have taken the whole day with DSL but it only took like, 10 mins or less? AMAZING!!! I'm telling you, if you have FiOS available in your neighborhood, get it! We got the triple-play bundle so we now also have long distance for the US and Canada with caller ID. It costs about the same as when we had Comcast plus DSL and phone but you can't even compare the two. FiOS is definitely superior. Hmmm ... I think Verizon should pay me for this entry (^_^)

Finn looks like ...

I won by only 6%! Jojo's friends or family members say that Finn looks like him but the same is said from my side so we always say that he's 50-50. But I guess it's more like 56-44 ... hehehe (^_^)

UPDATE:
I did it again with a different picture for Jojo, without his glasses and this was the result:

So it really is 50-50!

Lookie!!!

"This award is for those bloggers who are nice people; good blog friends and those who inspire good feelings and inspiration. Also for those who are a positive influence on our blogging world. Once you've been awarded please pass it on to others who you feel are deserving of this award."

I got an award! Thanks so much to Liz for honoring me with this Nice Matters Award. According to her, "We were schoolmates from grade school 'til high school. We did not grow up to be that close but I just would like to acknowledge the fact that she is one of the nicest persons I know. No pretensions - it's just her!" Sweet (^_^) Even if she hasn't been blogging recently, she still found the time to send out this award. Now that's nice!
So it's my turn to pass this nice gesture to others. Since I don't have a lot of blog friends, I send this out to all of you on my list of links! You're all there for a reason, you're my friend and have touched me at one point in my life. So that automatically means you're nice (~_^) If you've received this award already, you're doubly blessed and I guess you're excused in forwarding another batch of awards out ... unless you want to (^-^)

Divas

Ok, I was watching some clips of the winning performance of the Philippine Madrigal Singers in the European Grand Prix held last month, and that got me to dig through my videos and pulled out the ADB Chorale concert in 2000 entitled "Divas". What's the connection? Well our coach and conductor then was from Madz that's why (^_^) So anyway, here's 2 clips - one is called the Cat's Meow and the other is a solo bit from Miss Saigon.

Student of the Day

Master Kim doesn't always give these certificates out so I'm proud that Finn got one today. I hope it won't be his last (^_^)

$2.00

That's how much I spent for 2 bags of books (^_^) A steal right? I've seen the sign at the public library a long time ago but haven't been able to check it out. Now that I have lots of time for myself, I decided to go. I brought with me 2 shopping bags just in case and I was hoping I could fit everything I wanted in just one bag but I just found more so good thing I brought along 2. It's only a dollar for a bag of books. These books are marked as discarded for whatever reason but they're not in bad shape at all and most are hardbound. I hope my bookshelf doesn't fall apart because of the weight ... I have to put 2 rows of books in a shelf, that is if I can make it fit.

Mini Golf

We went to Dynamite Falls Adventure Golf after lunch today. It's Finn's first time and have been asking to go to one since last year, but it's only now that we found one close enough (thanks to our GPS). It was fun but it was sooo hot out today. Maybe it's better to go back there during spring or fall ... or later in the afternoon till evening. When we finished the course and I tallied our scores, Finn got a little upset when he found out he lost to us. But he enjoyed it and said he loves golf (^_^)

Kindergarten!

It's Finn's first day in Kindergarten today (^_^) Assembly was at 8.30am and since there's only one kindergarten class, his classmates are mostly from his pre-k class too so it's a nice reunion for them. This week, they only have 4-hr sessions so I'm gonna pick him up at 12.30. Starting next week, class will be up to 3pm. Yay! More "me" time (^_^) No more hurrying when running errands, I can take my time grocery shopping or just relax at home, watch what I want to watch without having to negotiate with Finn on who gets to watch in the big TV, play PS2 without interruptions ... sigh ... can't wait for next week when full day classes begin.

Canadian Weekend

We spent Labor Day weekend in Canada visiting my sister. Drove 9 hours from NJ to get to Scarborough on Friday and got there a little after 9pm. The next afternoon was spent in Canada's Wonderland and we all had a great time! We were only able to ride Dragon Fire and Vortex plus Speed City Raceway, White Water Canyon and Spongebob Squarepants 3D. We didn't want to wait long in lines and had to catch the bus home too so there wasn't really enough time to ride everything.
Sunday, we went to Pacific Mall and we got all excited coz there were a lot of anime shops, cosplay stores and swords!!!!! We got ourselves a set of 3 small swords with a stand. When we have our own house, we'll be able to collect lots more. I also wanted to buy a priestess/miko outfit but it was $160 (-_-) So I just got myself an Ichigo keychain and Akatsuki wallet. Finn bought a keyblade. After eating lunch at the mall, we went around downtown Toronto, then headed back home.
Monday was our last day and we left after 11am. This time it took us 11 hours!!!!! Man were we tired. Got home past 10pm and I still had to pack Jojo's bag for his trip to Princeton this morning. Right now I'm still kinda sleepy but I have to prepare for Finn's first day of school tomorrow too.
Anyway, enjoy the photos here (^_^)

Presidential Coins

I'm not a hardcore numismatist but I have some that I inherited from my mom and grandfather, plus our state quarters collection. Then I found this special offer in Newsweek magazine (Aug. 13 issue) about the Presidential dollar coins that they're giving away for FREE! Well, you get the first year (4 coins) free if you get the Presidential Money Gallery - the album - which is $8 plus shipping so a total of less than $13.
The coins are special because they are carved with edge lettering and since they are uncirculated, they come in crystal clear display capsules. The album itself is hand made with the great seal in the center.
The other 36 uncirculated coins is worth $162 (-,-) I wonder if Jojo is willing to buy it for me? Hmmm ...

UPDATE: I got my answer ..... sigh (-_-) Oh well.

Restoration

Jojo has some old photos that he wanted scanned and restored so that's what I did today. I'm a virgin at this so please don't compare me to pros but I'm quite pleased with what I've accomplished. There's a few of them but I'm only going to show you these two ... although the other one didn't really need that much work.

0

Reactrix

We were in Princeton last week and Finn and I went to a mall there. It wasn't a big mall, there wasn't even a play area for kids so we were kinda bored. Good thing there was a Reactrix there so Finn got to, somehow, play. I've seen this in other malls and it's pretty amusing. The projector is on the ceiling and the screen is on the floor. Naturally, you'll cast a shadow on the screen when you step on it and that's what reacts to the display, as opposed to pressure. The display runs through a series of ads and just loops it. Here's two clips of Finn enjoying it very much (^_^)

Protecting Mosquitos?

We were in Tiendesitas one time and we found this in one of the stalls. In the Philippines, we call this katol, an insect repelling incense. I guess most people use citronella candles now but if you still buy katol, I think you should stay away from this brand from Thailand coz instead of driving mosquitos away, it protects them ... bwahahahaha!!!
